As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" level.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Various sections of Delhi showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy limit set by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that covers the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Yet recently, the recently formed city government petitioned the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during designated periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city recorded air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

International Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants originating in across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the city have remained as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the air has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing approximately 10k early mortalities annually in Delhi.
