Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.
