The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
