Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior official stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
